EXHIBITS TO SPOTLIGHT GEORGIA’S COURTHOUSES AND ANNE FRANK

The Troup County Archives will host traveling exhibits on Georgia Courthouses and on Anne Frank in April and May. Georgia’s Courthouses will be featured April 1-18 and Anne Frank will be spotlight April 25-May 20.

GEORGIA’S COURTHOUSES: Georgia has one of America’s greatest collections of county courthouses with 132 listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

A new exhibit featuring the architectural and historical significance of these community landmarks, “Georgia’s Historic Courthouses: Celebrating a Living Legacy” will be on display in LaGrange April 1-18 promoting the importance of preserving these important buildings.

The exhibit was developed by the Historic Preservation Division (HPD) of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and will be on display at the Troup County Archives. Ray Luce, Director of HPD, and Clark Johnson, Troup County Historian, will speak about the courthouses at a Historical Society brunch on Thursday, April 13th at Events on Main starting at 11:30 a.m. Cost is $15 per person. Reserve your space by calling the Archives, 706-884-1828.

“We created this exhibit to call attention to Georgia’s unique collection of county courthouses because many of these landmark buildings are endangered,” said HPD Division Director Ray Luce.

“Courthouses are so central to a community’s quality of life and economic development that every effort should be made to ensure that they continue as an active part of their communities.”

The Courthouses project is supported by the Georgia Humanities Council and the National EXHIBITS Endowment for the Humanities and designed by Avient Museum Services.

ANNE FRANK: State Representative Jeff Brown has made arrangements with the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust and the Anne Frank Center, USA

to bring the exhibit, “Anne Frank: A History For Today”, to the Troup County Archives. The exhibit was produced in the Netherlands and will travel to only 10 cities in the State of Georgia this year.

A special program featuring Sylvia Wygoda, of the Holocaust Commission, and Representative Brown will be held in late April. Invitations will be mailed out soon for that event.

In addition to the Anne Frank exhibit, the Archives will also host the exhibit, “Witness to the Holocaust: World War II Veteran William A Scott III at the Liberation of Buchenwald Concentration Camp”. This exhibit is a photographic essay of one of Atlanta’s leading African American citizens, whose family founded the Atlanta Daily World newspaper. Scott was a WWII photojournalist and one of the first Allied soldiers to witness the liberation of Buchenwald. The exhibit illustrates the continuing relevance of Anne Frank’s story and the important lessons it can teach. The exhibit reminds us that the discrimination and racism did not disappear when World War II ended. Learning about Frank’s life story challenges the viewer to think about tolerance, mutual respect, and the significance of human rights.

HISTORY DAY CONTEST HELD AT LAGRANGE COLLEGE

What do Margaret Sanger, Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson, Harriett Beecher Stowe, Texans at the Alamo and Troup County’s own Clay Bryant have in common? They all took a stand on an important issue and changed the course of history. TAKING A STAND IN HISTORY: PEOPLE, IDEAS, EVENTS is the 2006 theme of National History Day. The Troup County Historical Society and Archives cosponsored the West Georgia Regional History Day contest with LaGrange College and the Georgia Humanities Council. On Friday, March 17, over 130 students, grades 6-12, from eight schools and three counties gathered on the main campus of LaGrange College for this all day event. First, second, and third place district winners advanced to the State Contest which will be held at Macon State College in Macon, Georgia, on Saturday, May 6. Winners from the state advance to the national contest, which is held on the campus of the University of Maryland in June.

This year’s entries were some of the best ever and judges had a difficult time selecting winners in the four categories. Local winners, their categories and topics were: Historical Papers, Junior Division, 1st place, Edward Boswell, Long Cane Middle School, “Rosa Parks”; 2nd place, Rachel Hancock, Long Cane Middle School, “Dietrich Bonhoeffer”; 3rd place, Jamal Bruce, Callaway Middle School, “Jackie Robinson.” In Junior Individual Documentaries, Ryan West, West Side Magnet School, placed first with his entry “Rosa Parks”. In Junior Group Documentaries, 3rd place went to Henry Hughes T. J. Harlin, and Gene Mansour, Gardner Newman Middle School, for their entry, “Bob Dylan Rockumentary.”

In Junior Individual Dramatic Performances, John Wagner of Gardner Newman Middle School tied for 3rd place with his entry on “Child Labor Laws”, in Group Dramatic Performance went to Emory Redding and Malcolm Kenyon of West Side Magnet School, for a performance entitled, “One Goal: W.E.B. DuBois and Booker T. Washington.”

In the area of Junior Individual Exhibits, Griffin Galloway of West Side Magnet School tied for 3rd place with his entry about “Sir William Wallace”. In Junior Group Exhibits, 2nd place was won by Savannah Kemp and Whitley Giddens of Gardner Newman Middle School for a project on “Cold Case: Clay Bryant”. First Place in this category went to Dillon Norris, Denver Norris and Lewis Goode for “Protecting LaGrange from LaGrange.”

LaGrange College President Stuart Gulley aided Archives’ Director Kaye L. Minchew and Education Archivist Barry Jackson, in presenting certificates and medals to the winners. Community judges for the events were Rodney Harmon, Todd Levins, Dr. Fred Mills, and Robert Bradfield who were assisted by LaGrange College history students, Stuart Miller, Judson Price, April Purdy, Liz White, Bill Gibson, Katie Rambler, James Robinson, Bill Stikes, Whitney Thompson, Margaret Blackwell, Chuck Peek, Callie Wheat, Nick Drescher, Joanna Davis, Jessica Pitts, Tanner Garrad, Michael Zeman, and Barbara Krumbach.

SUMMER INSTITUTE FOR TEACHERS

Preparations are underway for the 2006 Summer Institute for social studies teachers. The Institute is sponsored by the Troup County School System, Troup County Historical Society and LaGrange College and is funded by the Teacher As Historian, Teaching American History Grant of the U. S. Department of Education. This summer’s theme “The New Deal and All That Jazz,” will focus on the 1920s and 1930s with emphasis on people, places and events in Troup County and West Georgia. Participating teachers will gather at the Archives, June 5-9, for hands-on learning activities, field trips and discussions.

Already lined up to speak to teachers are historians John Lupold (Columbus State), Glen Eskew (Georgia State), John Inscoe (UGA) and John Lawrence and Joe Cafaro (LaGrange College). Area citizens will speak with teachers about their lives during this period of history. In addition to studying downtown LaGrange and Troup County history, teachers will tour a textile plant, take a cemetery tour, and visit homes and churches. A “Hollywood” movie surprise is also scheduled .

Teachers who participate will earn a $1000 stipend and 3 PLUs upon the completion, and acceptance by the school system, of a daily lesson plan that uses local documents to teach some phase of this period of history. Lesson plans will be posted on a school system website.
