MoM VALENTINE GALA ....A SMASHING SUCCESS

Winter 2004 has been a busy season for Museum on Main: A History Museum for West Georgia. In early February, President Bit Taylor and the Board of Trustees announced that the museum would be located on the first floor of 136 Main Street. The Troup County Archives will move to the second floor and take over the public meeting rooms.

Then MoM held its first official function on February 14, 2004, with a Valentine’s Day dinner and dance. Betty Fagundes chaired this lovely event. The gala featured a gourmet dinner prepared by guest chef Jamie Keeting, an impressive dessert bar, decorations by Sallie Brabant Affairs to Remember and the big band sound of the Cavaliers Band. Spending Valentine’s evening with MoM has never been better! The evening also introduced Troup County to six figures who are expected to spend their future in Museum on Main serving as needed. The figures are life-size cutouts of dancers from the dance studio of Helen Jackson James in the 1930s and 1940s. Dr. Sallie Callaway Brabant (shown to the left) was our first poster child. The daughter of Dr. Enoch and Jennie Callaway, she danced with Helen Jackson’s group in 1940 and went onto become a Sociology Professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. We were thrilled that she was able to join us at the party.

After master of ceremonies Stuart Gulley introduced her to the group as our very own poster child (her photo was on posters announcing the event), Sallie Callaway Brabant declared that she had never been a poster child before -- and never expected to become one, especially during her retirement years!

Special thanks go to the hardworking Gala Committee. Members were:

  • Betty Fagundes
  • Sue Long
  • Susan Hall

PASTPERFECT AND PHOTOS AT THE ARCHIVES

The Troup County Archives is using a new database management program for its photograph collection. PastPerfect allows researchers to Click to enlargeview an image while reading information about the photo on the same screen. The program displays a thumbnail image with information such as the photographer, image date, caption and subject of the photo beneath the image. PastPerfect is user friendly and conforms to archival standards.

PastPerfect also allows researchers to print a paper copy for their own use. When printing, the researcher has the option of printing a large version of the photo with its basic description or a small thumbnail image with all of the data pertaining to the image. The copy fee is twenty cents per page.

Researchers will find many uses for PastPerfect. This is a a quick way to view photos in the Troup County Archives’ collections of people, events, and buildings in LaGrange and Troup County. Property owners interested in restoring their homes and buildings can search for photos from earlier eras. Students will be able to obtain paper copies of photos for research projects such as History Day.

PastPerfect is a great addition to the Troup County Archives. Please take some time when you are visiting the Archives to preview this new way to view our photographs.

ARTIFACT SPOTLIGHT

“Dixie and Dunson Mills: Saluting 203 years of textile manufacturing” is the topic of a new exhibit at the Troup County Archives that will be on display until Fall, 2004. Earlier this year, WestPoint Stevens announced that Dixie and Dunson will close. The closings will mark a very sad time in the history of LaGrange and Troup County. Dixie opened in 1895 and Dunson started production in 1911 and generations of area residents have worked at the mills. The Archives’ exhibit salutes the history of the mills and people who kept the machinery running hour after hour, year after year. The LaGrange Daily News published a special edition, called “The Last Whistle,” on March 30, 2004. Over fifty News readers contributed their remembrances, stories, photos and clippings for this special edition. The Archives was happy to add factual details and photos. Copies of this information will be housed permanently at the Troup County Archives while artifacts and photos are included in the display.

Dixie Coin Rev. Jeff Howard of LaGrange recently donated three Dixie coinsto the Archives’ artifact collection. The coins are worth five -- with no indication of five what -- nickels, dollars, units?? The coins could be used at the mill store. Do you remember what these coins were used for or why they were given out? Do you remember anything you bought or sold with such coins? (Note the coin is about the size of a nickel.) If you do, please call the Archives at 884-1828 or e-mail us at info@trouparchives.org.

This newsletter is a quarterly publication of the Troup County Historical Society and Archives, 136 Main Street, P.O. Box 1051, LaGrange, GA 30241.
