COLLECTIONMS-2009.101869-1992 SOURCE: Earl Cook, Jr. SIZE: .3 lf SHELVING UNIT: 1 document box PROCESSING: BNJ, 2009 BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE:Earl Pope Cook, Jr., is the son of Earl Pope Cook, Sr. (b. 9/7/1877-d.7/30/1943) and Katherine Tigner (d. 4/21/1991), daughter of Frank C. Tigner, Sr. During World War II, Earl, Jr., served with the Army Signal Corps at Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star. After military service, he completed studies at Georgia Tech and, on June 21, 1947, married Edith Wilson Harber, daughter of Paul T. Harber. He obtained the rank of Major in the U.S. Army Reserves.The Cook family was from the Long Cane Community of Troup County. Both Earl, Sr. and his father, Nathan M. Cook (b. 9/13/1830-d. 4/14/1911), were farmers. In 1936, Earl, Sr. became a charter member and chairman of the Rural Electrification Authority in Troup County. SCOPE AND CONTENT:This collection contains genealogical information relating to the Ball, Cook(e) and Ingram families. News articles relating to the life of Frank C. Tigner, Jr., former Mayor of LaGrange and uncle to Earl P. Cook, Jr., is included. Clippings on a possum hunt and supper given in 1930 for Franklin D. Roosevelt is found in the collection as is information on the Long Cane Community of Troup County.
