 Manuscript MS-2003.08MS-2003.08 1938 to 1975 SOURCE: Estate of Martha Mae Deal SIZE: .3lf PROCESSING: BNJ, 2003 BIOGRAPHICAL DATA: Martha Mae "Matsy" Rushing Deal, born November 15, 1907, in Bulloch County, Georgia, devoted her life to the advancement and appreciation of music. She graduated from Georgia Teachers College, now Georgia Southern University, in 1938. Mrs. Deal began her teaching career at Harwell Avenue Elementary School in 1946 when her husband, William J. Deal (born 1907, died April 28, 1968), was named the band and choral director at LaGrange High School. She later became music teacher and librarian at Hollis Hand School. Mrs. Deal was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, a charter member of the Symphony Association Board and the Lafayette Society for Performing Arts, a member of the LaGrange Woman's Club, Roundtable Book Club, and served on the Board of the LaGrange Mutual Concert Association. Their home on Cameron Mill Road was the former "Fairmont Plantation," home of James Jackson and his son Robert Housand Jackson. It became known as "Daffodil Hill," thanks to the many flowers that bloomed there each spring. She died October 26, 2002. SCOPE AND CONTENT: The collection consists of Mrs. Deal's diploma from South Georgia Teachers College, 1938; a scrapbook, "The Invasion of Okinawa;" slides of "Daffodil Hill" and the flowers grown by William J. Deal; and football championship towels from LaGrange High School. A map of the Deal property is also included.
