HISTORICAL NOTE

The Chattahoochee Valley Art Association was organized on March 30, 1963, in LaGrange, Georgia. Since its inception, the CVAA has worked to promote cultural and artistic growth in the valley region. The group holds art classes for adults and children, sponsors exhibitions for local artists, and invites well-known artists to display their works. Two of the CVAA's most notable contributions are the annual Sidewalk Art Show (also known as the Affair in the Square, A Fair on the Square, and Kaleidoscope), and the Chattahoochee Valley Art Museum on Hines Street in LaGrange. The association changed its name from Chattahoochee Valley Art Association to Chattahoochee Valley Art Museum in 1991.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The collection consists of two scrapbooks and one manuscript box of folders that relate to activities of the CVAA from 1963 to 1982. They contain newspaper clippings, promotional material, and correspondence related to CVAA business, local art exhibitions, and the annual Sidewalk Art Show. There are only one or two newspaper articles related to the renovation of the old jail and the opening of the art museum in 1978. There are also photographs in the collection. Most notably, there is a photograph of the first CVAA meeting in March 1963, and numerous photographs of past Sidewalk Art Shows including the very first in August 1963.

The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings, promotional material, and other documents related to the formation of the CVAA, the annual Sidewalk Art Show, and CVAA activities. There are photographs of the first CVAA meeting and first two Sidewalk Art Shows.

Scrapbook #2 1966-67

The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings, promotional material, and correspondence regarding local and regional art shows, annual Sidewalk Art Show, and other CVAA activities. There are also photographs of 1966-67 CVAA officers and the 1966 Sidewalk Art Show.

Manuscript box:

The manuscript box contains newspaper clippings, promotional material, correspondence, and other documents related to the history of the association, the annual Sidewalk Art Show, local art exhibitions, and CVAA activities.
