Manuscript No. 119SOUTHWEST LAGRANGE SCHOOLBERTA WEATHERSBEE SCHOOL1916-2001
SIZE: .8 lf SHELVING UNITS: 1 document boxes 2 oversized boxes 1 newspaper box 1 oversized folder PROCESSING: BNJ, 2001 BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Southwest LaGrange School was established in 1916 by Callaway Mills Company with Chilton W. Coleman as Superintendent (1916-1923) and Miss Fleming Ward as Principal (1916-1923). In 1919, the school became part of the LaGrange School System and, in 1953, the old building was replaced with a modern structure which stands on Forrest Avenue. Mrs. G.G. (Herberta) Weathersbee, affectionately known as "Miss Berta," was appointed Principal in 1929 and continued in this capacity until retiring in 1970. The school was renamed Berta Weathersbee School in her honor in 1974. In 2001, the building went through an extensive renovation. SCOPE/CONTENT Items in this collection reflect the history of both schools, most notably through newspaper and journal articles, school programs, student performances and work, school census reports, philosophy and schedules and teacher records. Other materials relate to the founding of the LaGrange Memorial Library by the LaGrange Woman's Club, pamphlets and advertisements related to Callaway Mills Company, articles written by Chilton W. Coleman relating to Southwest LaGrange School and community, some personal correspondence to and by "Miss Berta," and articles written by Cason J. Callaway. Local and Atlanta newspapers feature articles about the school and its importance to the mill community. Many of the items were apparently collected by "Miss Berta."
