HISTORICAL NOTE:

The LaGrange Business Girls' League is the oldest organization of its kind in Troup County. The League was founded in the fall of 1915 when a group of business women of the First Baptist Church, who were unable to attend meetings of the Missionary Society, decided to meet one Friday evening a month using the regular missionary program. Founding members were: Viola Burks (first president of the League), Katie Andrews, V.E. Baugh, Sara Baugh, Ethel Broome, Bess Herring, Berta Herring, Ruth Huff, Sue Milner, Loula Stevens, Clara Vaughan, Louise Vaughan, and Maude Phillips. Meetings were held regularly until the flu epidemic of 1918, when meetings were suspended, until 1919.

In 1920, the League applied for an official charter from the state of Georgia when Dr. W.E. Morgan offered to donate land to the group near the Chattahoochee River on which a club house could be built. Col. A.H. Thompson handled the League's application and it was soon granted a charter. In appreciation for his services, Mr. Thompson was made an honorary member, making him the only male to ever be inducted into the group. Dr. Morgan died March 9, 1921, before the transactions were completed. Plans for the "River Clubhouse" were apparently forgotten. The League continues to be active within the LaGrange community through service projects and trips, dinners, and educational meetings for its members.
