Among them were Heyman Heyman and Louis Merz who came to Troup County in 1853. They worked as bookkeepers and in the mercantile business, and during the Civil War operated a tannery. Several West Point Jews served in the Confederate Army. Of particular note was Lewis Merz, who served as a war correspondent for the LaGrange Reporter until he was killed at the battle of Sharpsburg in 1862. In 1872 John J. Hagedorn came to West Point and established a mercantile business which became one of the most prominent in the community. This collection contains memorabilia, clippings, post cards and photographs documenting the business interests, travels, and religious activities of the West Point Jewish community.
