BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Lottie Louise "Biddy" Barfield was born 28 September 1929 in Columbus, Georgia, the daughter of Louise Calhoun and Grover Barfield. (The elder Louise Barfield is author of History of Harris County, Georgia, 1827-1961.) She was educated in the Columbus public schools. She attended Wesleyan College and graduated from Auburn University in 1950, with a B.S. in Education, majoring in American History. In 1951, she married Paul Lane Hammett, Jr. They have two daughters. After teaching in the LaGrange public schools, Mrs. Hammett pursued a career as a freelance artist and writer. Her interest in the civic affairs of LaGrange and Troup County is reflected in this collection.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

Mrs. Hammett's interest in art and history led her to help found the Chattahoochee Valley Art Association in 1963 and the Ocfuskee Historical Society in 1972. The collection contains information on the organization and early activities of both groups. Records of two other organizations which Mrs. Hammett helped found, the Tabard Literary Club and the Pine Trace Pony Club, are included. Mrs. Hammett's correspondence is arranged chronologically and deals with her civic interests. Some of Mrs. Hammett's art work is represented in sketches which accompany her newspaper articles on historic Troup County buildings.

A 1925 newspaper article features Newnan and Coweta County. Franklin, Georgia is the subject of an undated booklet, and several pamphlets feature LaGrange.

Mrs. Hammett's research notes cover a wide range of topics relating to Troup County history. Most of the material is photocopied from her notebooks. Biographical sketches of leading citizens and genealogies of prominent Troup County families are included. National Register nomination information on the Ferrell - Holder House is part of a survey of historic sites conducted by Mr. and Mrs. Hammett in 1972. Other topics include, Asbury and Providence Churches, early LaGrange merchants, Troup Factory, and the original subdivision of LaGrange. An index follows the container list.
