![]() Manuscript MS-004NIX-PRICE COLLECTION 1893-1960 Manuscript Collection No. 4 SOURCE: Mrs. Lewis Price, LaGrange, Georgia SIZE: 6.5 lf, 4 volumes SHELVING UNITS: 12 Manuscript boxes (photos) 1 Manuscript box (correspondence) 3 Flat storage boxes and 7 volumes (scrapbooks) 2 Rare books (Bibles) 1 OPP photo (over sized) 1 Box of postcards PROCESSING: DHS, LM, KL, May 1985 SOURCE NOTE: Mrs. Lewis Price presented this collection to the Troup County Archives. Mostly the materials belonged originally to Julia and Mary Nix. Mrs. Price lived in Sunny Gables, the home built by the Nix sisters, after they moved in the late-1940s. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Members of the Nix family figure most prominently in this collection. Sisters Mary and Julia Nix and Carrie Nix Nooner along with their mother Eugene Gay Nix collected the photographs, postcards, and scrapbooks. Their interest in and love of LaGrange and Troup County are well-documented in this collection. One particular point of pride for the Nix family was their Tudor-style home, Sunny Gables, on Broad Street. Designed by Hentz, Adler and Schutz of Atlanta, the home was built in 1926 and the Nix sisters lived there until the Lewis Price family purchased the home in the late 1940's. The home is now utilized by LaGrange College as their School of Nursing. Following is brief biographical notes about members of the Nix family. Julia Gay Nix was born November 17, 1881. She died July 12, 1958 and is buried at Hillview Cemetery. Caroline (Carrie) Elizabeth Nix Nooner was born August 12, 1888, and died on August 13, 1954 and is buried at Hillview Cemetery. She was married to Harry A. Nooner (D June 23, 1941) on December 25, 1918. Mary Barnard Nix was born January 8, 1883 and died June 21 1955, she is also buried at Hillview Cemetery. Mary taught school until receiving on inheritance from her uncle, John M. Barnard a local banker and businessman, following his death in 1919. The Nix sisters built Sunny Gables with part of this inheritance. Subsequently the sisters were very involved in local civic activities. Eugene Gay Nix (known throughout most of this collection as Mother Nix) was born to John Thomas Gay (1828-1865) and Caroline Ware-Poythress-Gay (1835-1922). She married William Howell Nix on December 9, 1880 and died May 31, 1934. William Howell Nix was born to William W. Nix (1810-1867) and Julia Howell (1818-1881) on September 28, 1856 and died June 4, 1889. He is buried at Hillview Cemetery. Their three children were Julia, Mary, and Carrie Nix. Caroline Ware Poythress Gay, mother of Mrs. Nix, was Third Corporal in the Nancy Harts. (Her devotion to the Confederacy is evident in the collection, however, her activities with the Nancy Harts are not documented here.) The Nix, Gay and Ware families were all long-time residents of LaGrange. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE These papers consist mostly of photographs, scrapbooks of newspaper clippings, postcards, and a few items of correspondence. Two family Bibles are also included. The collection is divided into four series: photographs, scrapbooks, postcards, and correspondence and loose clippings. These papers focus primarily on LaGrange and area residents during the 1930's and 1940's. The bulk of the collection consists of photographs, most taken by LaGrange photographer Snelson Davis. They are primarily portrait and group photos and scenes of downtown buildings, streets and area residences. Postcards of popular vacation spots in the 1930's and 1940's, and other items of interest can also be found in this collection. SERIES NOTES PHOTOGRAPHS, 1920-1959 5 linear feet (12 manuscript boxes) The majority of the photographs in the collection were taken by LaGrange photographer Snelson Davis between 1930 and 1950. The bulk of the collection consists of commercial portraits of LaGrange area residents such as portraits of babies, children, and adults. Also included are photographs of many weddings which took place in LaGrange from the mid-1930's until the 1940's. Photos of area residents in military uniform during WW II can be found here along with local groups such as the LaGrange Woman's Club. LaGrange area churches, mills and schools, as well as downtown buildings, street scenes and homes are included. Disasters such as the Troup County courthouse fire and various May Day celebrations, LaGrange College activities, Callaway picnics, golden wedding anniversaries and the dedications of the Callaway Tower and Lanier Memorial are recorded here. There are also several photographs of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Warm Springs, Georgia, mostly taken during the 1930s. A container list and a personal name index follow at the end of this description. SCRAPBOOKS, 1920-1960 18 volumes (3 flat storage boxes and 7 loose volumes) These scrapbooks of newspapers clippings span the years from 1920-1960. Caroline E. Gay compiled vol. 16, a scrapbook of newspaper clippings dealing with Confederate memories. The volume dates 1920. Remaining volumes were put together by her granddaughter, Carrie Nix Nooner and date from 1930-1960. Others may have been compiled by the Nix sisters. The bulk of the clippings cover local newsworthy items. The Troup County courthouse fire (vol. 3) and the strike and eviction of Callaway Mills workers (vol. 9) are among the topics covered. Obituaries of such notables as W.L. Stribling (vol. 1), Miss Belle Boddie (vol. 8), and Mrs. C.E. Gay (vol. 16) can be found here as well as wedding announcements and local interest stories from LaGrange, Atlanta, and Daytona Beach, FL. Clippings concerning Franklin D. Roosevelt, his frequent visits to Warm Springs, GA, during the 1930's, and his contact with local citizens can be found throughout the volumes. The clippings also cover the period of the Second World War, emphasizing LaGrange area men and women in uniform and war-related efforts in the private sector. Short histories of the Terrace Hotel (Vol. 15) and local buildings such as the Atkinson or Bull homes (vol. 8) are included. These scrapbooks portray life during the Depression Era, World War II, and the period immediately after as seen through the eyes of four local citizens. POSTCARDS, 1900-1940 .5 linear foot (1 box) Postcards and greeting cards date from 1900-1940. Some of the cards depict well known scenes and buildings in LaGrange and Troup County, Atlanta, Columbus, and elsewhere in Georgia and the USA. Many of these cards are from vacation spots popular during the early part of the century. Postcards from Germany, France, and Italy dating circa 1906 are included. Greeting cards dating from 1906-1912 exemplify artistic trends of the period. All greeting cards in the series were commercially produced. Personalized cards showing LaGrange people or scenes can be found in the following series. CORRESPONDENCE AND MISCELLANEOUS, c.1800-1947 .5 linear foot (1 Manuscript Box) Correspondence includes thank you notes from Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and Richard B. Russell to Eugene Nix and Carrie Nooner. There is also a letter from the LaGrange photographer J.S. Schaub acknowledging Carrie Gay's "Undying devotion to the Holy memories of our Confederate dead." The Civil War letters of Jack and Carrie Gay reveal interesting details of the lives of soldiers in the Army of Northern Virginia and civilians in LaGrange. Certificates acknowledging donations to the building fund for Georgia Hall at Warm Springs, GA, are included here. A program from the 1931 LaGrange College Centennial Banquet and greeting cards depicting local scenes, homes and people can be found. Newspaper clippings covering area marriages, obituaries, and news complete this section.
