BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE:

William Wates Keller (b. 2-22-1912; d. 8-20-1996), son of William Eugene Keller and Nora Fincannon, was born in Rutherfordton, NC. He joined the faculty of LaGrange High School in 1937 as a teacher of chemistry and physics and served as principal from 1951-1969. From 1969 until his retirement in 1978, he served as an administrator of Federal Programs in the LaGrange School System. During World War II, Mr. Keller was a chemical supervisor of Ordinances in Radford, Virginia, Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Sauk Prairie, Wisconsin.

W. W. Keller served the education community as president of the LaGrange Education Association, Georgia Education Association, and Georgia Association of Secondary School Principals. He was a Life Member of the LaGrange Kiwanis Club, served as Chairman of the LaGrange Chapter of United Way and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was married to the former Julia Vernon of Opelika, Alabama, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Atkinson. They had three children.

SCOPE AND CONTENT:

The collection contains information collected on schools in the LaGrange System that Keller and retired LaGrange High School English teacher, Lillian Clark, used in writing their book, The LaGrange Public Schools, 1903-1984. Also included are curriculum guides and visiting committee reports on various local schools and reports on LaGrange High School sports, academics and self-studies.
