BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Oliver Hunnicutt was born in Macon, Georgia on May 29, 1914. He attended Lanier High in Macon and then went on to attend prep school at Brewton Parker Institute until 1936. In 1940, he graduated from the University of Georgia with a B.S. in Education and earned a Master of Science in Education from Auburn University in 1954. While at U.G.A., he ran track and played halfback for the Bulldogs. His coaching career began in 1941 when he served as head coach at Gainesville High School. In 1942, he moved to LaGrange, and became head coach and Athletic Director at LaGrange High. From 1943-1945, he left LaGrange High to serve in World War II. He served in the Air Force in the Pacific during this time. In 1945, he returned and achieved an impressive record coaching the Grangers during a 28 year coaching career. He led the team to two state championships in 1955 and 1958. He retired from LaGrange High with a record of 187 wins, 96 losses, and tied 19 games.
He received many honors including being named the Atlanta Touch Down Club's Coach of the Year in 1955 and being elected to the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 1961. In 1970, he was elected to the National Football Hall of Fame, Atlanta Chapter.
Oliver Hunnicutt was married to the former Olivia Leggett. They had three sons: Pat, Jim, and Charles. Olivia died on July 14, 1997. Hunnicutt was an elder of the LaGrange First Presbyterian Church.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The materials in this collection date from about 1937-1998 and consist mostly of scrapbooks of photographs (both original prints and copies), newspaper clippings, game programs, correspondence, and memorabilia relating to Hunnicutt's coaching career, family, University of Georgia, and World War II. Two boxes contain greeting cards and correspondence on occasions such as birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, and other special occasions. Coach Hunnicutt assembled these scrapbooks during his last years. His arrangement has been left intact.
Among the loose items are university and state high school football programs dating from the 1930s til the 1980s. Programs from other organizations Hunnicutt belonged to, such as the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame and the Atlanta Touch Down Club, are included as well. Also included are high school yearbooks and plaques, awards, and diplomas belonging to Hunnicutt.
Note: Materials relating to LaGrange High School athletics are not sorted by year or by sport. Researchers may want all the scrapbooks for needed information. Materials relating to the First Presbyterian Church of LaGrange will be found mixed throughout.
