BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE:

James Gates Truitt (b. 3-13-1849; d. 1-8-1923) was the son of James Monroe Truitt and Mariah Louisa Hall. Truitt was an industrialist and capitalist whose Victorian Home stood on the southwest corner of Main and Broome Streets where the Bank of America stands in 2010. Besides his economic interests in various mills, he owned Truitt Opera House, once known as Sterling Hall, which stood on the southeast corner of Main and Hines Street. Truitt served three terms on the LaGrange City Council. James G. Truitt married Mary E. Hall on May 22, 1872.

SCOPE AND CONTENT:

The collection is one scrapbook containing poems, essays and quotations clipped from newspapers. None of the clippings appear to be written by local authors or about residents of Troup County.
