BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Katherine Hyde Greene was born in West Point, Georgia, on November 21, 1928. She was educated at LaGrange College, and later worked for West Point Stevens for over 50 years at the Lanett Bleachery and Dye Works and at the Fairview plant. Mrs. Greene also worked as a columnist for the Valley Times - News and was a published photographer. Her photographs were prominently featured in William Davidson's book, Pine Log and Greek Revival. She married Reverend Charles W. Greene, Jr., and had five stepdaughters and one stepson. Mrs. Greene served on the Council of Ministries and the Administrative Board of the First United Methodist Church of West Point, where she was a member. She was a member of the Troup County Historical Society, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and many other civic organizations. She was a past president of the Chattahoochee Valley Historical Society. Katherine Hyde Greene died on February 13, 2000.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection contains photographs and slides (comprising the largest portion of the collection) and news clippings, memorabilia, publications, and scrapbooks. Mrs. Greene took the photographs from the 1940s to the 1990s. Earlier photographs taken by unidentified photographers date back to the early 1900s. Most photographs and slides in the collection are from the West Point, Valley, Callaway Gardens, and LaGrange areas of Georgia and Alabama; however, there are also images from travels around the state and country. Many photographs of homes, buildings, people, and special events from the area can be found, as well as a large collection of covered bridge photographs and slides taken throughout the United States. Some of the slides taken by Greene for Pine Log and Greek Revival by William Davidson are included. Several slides of West Point Lake, including the construction and dedication of the dam are included as well. Slides of Callaway Gardens and various flowers and yards are also featured.

News clippings deal with events in the West Point and Valley area, including the construction of West Point Dam. There is also information on LaGrange College within the collection. Included are publications pertaining to West Point, particularly of West Point High School. The publications pertain to school functions such as football games and drama productions. Other publications include those regarding the Valley Cotton Festival, the West Point Manufacturing Company, and LaGrange College. Scrapbooks contain photographs, news articles, brochures, publications, and various items and cover a variety of subjects including West Point Dam, Burnt Village, Callaway Gardens, Covered Bridges, and LaGrange College.
