Hillview Cemetery Tour
Shannon | 05/05/2017
We are very excited to continue our series of walking tours in LaGrange. People of all ages love to participate in either the street or cemetery tours. The street tours feature stories of local people and history associated with the buildings but also explanations of architectural styles. In the cemetery tours, we take different routes through the cemetery. Often the focus is on a topic, like graves associated with military history, women, or politicians, or educators. Our next cemetery ramble will focus on the history of our colleges. It is surprising how much of our collegiate history is to be found in our cemeteries, especially Hillview.
The next tour is coming up Sunday, June 4, 2017 at 2 p.m. a walking tour in Hillview Cemetery. Meet at 111 Old Morgan Street and park opposite Dr. Harris’ veterinarian hospital. Wear comfortable shoes and a hat. We will provide water bottles. Walking sticks (especially those that convert to a seat) are a good idea if you have one. Come hear stories about some of the people who have made LaGrange what it is today. In times past, the cemetery was a place of resort, especially on holidays and Sundays. It served as a sort of public park. Often, there were concerts. Local history, and even beyond, were passed from one generation to the next while strolling through the monuments.
