BIG CHANGES ARE COMING to 136 Main Street in LaGrange!

The building at 136 Main Street in LaGrange is about to have its first extensive changes since the renovation twenty-five years ago which led to the 136 Main St. BuildingTroup County Archives opening in January 1983. The first floor of the building will be extensively renovated to become the new home for Museum on Main: A History Museum for West Georgia. Public meeting rooms on the second floor will be converted into library and office space for the Troup County Archives. Storage areas on the third floor will remain generally unchanged.

Renovations are expected to start this summer and will last nine to twelve months. Skip Smith of Smith Design Group is serving as the architect of the project.

This project has been in the planning stages for several years! Many people are hard at work trying to make these plans and dreams a reality!

New Publications

BookI Must Sing! The Era With Carrie Fall Benson is a new volume written by Louise Barfield (Biddy) Hammett and just published this Spring. Copies of the book can be obtained at a luncheon being held in Hammett’s honor on May 4th by the Troup County Historical Society and LaGrange College. (For more information, call 706-884-1828) or go to www.lagrange.edu. Go to the page for the bookstore and look under books by LC authors. Hammett was the first president of the Historical Society and Benson was a longtime librarian and poet at LaGrange College.
BookOracle of the Ages: Reflections on the Curious Life of Fortune Teller Mayhayley Lancaster by Dot Moore has just been published in paperback. The Troup County Archives has autographed copies available for $19.95. This very popular book on the Heard County fortune teller has been out-of-print for over a year. It is a fascinating story!
BookWe Call Our Daddy “Mister” by James E. Schell chronicles the story of Burrell Harrell, the son of a Confederate soldier. Harrell refused to abide by the customs and traditions of the Stars and Bars. He took up with a mulatto woman who bore him nine white children, five boys and four girls. They lived as a family in Georgia, contrary to custom and law. Harrell took on all comers to safeguard his children. His children were not accepted as white; they lived a difficult life being neither white nor black, but were conditioned culturally as black. The Troup County Archives has copies of this book for sale for $19.65.

Scanning Project Underway

As announced earlier, the Troup County Archives is the recipient of a grant from the National Historical Records and Publications Commission to digitize Troup County’s Nineteenth Century court records. As a requirement to receive the grant, we had to match the funds in various ways, including having volunteers donate time toward preparing the documents for scanning. The major step in preparing the documents was to “flatten” them out. Originally, the documents were folded about three times or more.

Our appeal for volunteers was more than met. A total of eleven people came forward to help. They were Sharon Alford, Jan Carnes, Jonathan Cox, Walter Dance, Terry Glisman, Lala Grindle, Paula Jones, Tina Quiggle, Chuck Stradcutter, and Bill and Melba Templeton. Some were only able to help once or twice, and some several times. They donated a total of 349.5 hours to the project, with five of our volunteers providing over 318 of the total hours, for an average of nearly 64 hours each. The leading volunteer hours were Walter Dance, with 77 hours; Tina Quiggle, with 68.5 hours; Terry Glisman, with 64.75 hours; Paula Jones, with 55.75 hours; and Chuck Stradcutter, with 52.75 hours. Groups met three hours daily, expect Wednesdays, from January 9th through March 22nd.

There were 159 boxes of records to go through and flatten. In addition to flattening the documents, the workers inserted acid free paper between each case. The added bulk meant that some boxes had to be re-boxed, so the end result was 189 boxes of documents. An appreciation luncheon was held on April 12th for those volunteers who could attend.

The importance of this project is incalculable. When the scanning is done, the records will be available for researchers on line which will insure that the information they contain will be more easily made into the overall picture of life in Georgia, especially Troup County, in the nineteenth century. We cannot thank our volunteers enough for their generosity in making this project a reality. Troup County people always rise to the occasion when a worthy project needs them!

ARTIFACT SPOTLIGHT:

Troup County Archives is proud to have as part of its holdings a collection dealing with the LaGrange Sports Authority, the “I Train In LaGrange” program, and the Olympic 50K Racewalk Trials held here. This collection documents the role LaGrange played in the 1996 Olympics, beginning in 1991, when they first began investigating how to bring the world to LaGrange. Documents cover the athletes who came here, how the community welcomed them, and how they interacted with locals. The Olympic Torch Run that came through Troup County is also covered. The collection includes subject files and correspondence, artifacts and memorabilia, as well as clippings and photographs related to the programs and various aspects of the whole period 1991-1997. The LaGrange Sports Authority gave LaGrange a significant connection to the Olympics and a spotlight in the world.
